Details released about teacher's suspected sexual assault

BRIGHTON - The affidavit has been released in the sexual assault investigation involving a former teacher at Brighton Charter School, revealing details about the alleged incident.

Social Studies teacher Carrie McCandless is charged with sexual assault and contributing to the delinquency of a minor for her relationship with a 17-year-old student.

The allegations stem from the school's annual camping trip to Estes Park on October 28.

The three page affidavit outlines a budding relationship between McCandless and the student which supposedly started after the high school senior broke up with his girlfriend.

Three weeks before the school camping trip, McCandless, who is also the principal's wife, traded 76 text messages in one day with the 17-year-old student, the affidavit states.

According to the affidavit, in one message the student wrote about being cold and McCandless responded, "just pretend you're here sweating with me."

The affidavit states that the day before the camping trip they went to Sam's Club together and "made out" in the car for 45 minutes.

While on the trip in Estes Park, the student said McCandless brought a bottle of Jack Daniel's whiskey for them to drink, according to the affidavit.

In the affidavit, he said they then began to kiss and touch each other's genitals in the common room of a cabin while other students slept.

However, one of those students told police and noticed the teacher and student making out by the fire, according to the affidavit.

A fellow teacher on the trip told investigators the student and McCandless appeared flirtatious and that he found a note in which the student wrote, "it was awesome, the best."

McCandless replied, "it's not like it was against my will. It was totally fun."

Another student told investigators McCandless and the 17-year-old, "did everything except have sex." He added that, "It was obvious to everyone what was going on."

The affidavit states that McCandless initially reported that the student leaned over and kissed her and hugged her and that she backed away saying it was inappropriate.

McCandless's attorney, Trent Trani said, "At this point these are just allegations."

Trani did not have any other comments.

McCandless is due back in court on Friday.
