Canine Culture
'If your dog steals food while you are present, you have more than a hungry dog on your hands. Such shameless thievery points to a disrespectful dog. By pilfering food right in front of you, your dog says "I think you are below me in the pack." To fix this, regain leadership by taking your dog to obedience class.
Regarding object theft, dominance again comes into play. The dog knows the item is yours; by taking it he flaunts his control. If you cannot get the item back, your dog has in effect said "I am faster and stronger than you." Guess who takes a step down in the pack hierarchy? Or, your dog may steal something in an attempt to command attention. When he does, you chase him around the home and pay attention. If you understand that an adult dog has the reasoning capacity of a three year-old child, the behavior's dynamics become clear.'
