Squeaky clean ducks

Who knew?

Save A Duck

If this bird could talk

From the shores of Alaska to the Galapagos Islands, wildlife rescuers have used Dawn dishwashing liquid to gently clean aquatic birds such as ducks, pelicans, gulls, and egrets. Animal rescue groups have chosen Dawn for more than two decades because it's effective at removing oil while being gentle on the birds' delicate feathers and skin.

Each year, bird rescue professionals such as the International Bird Rescue Research Center and Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research, with the help of Dawn, save the lives of thousands of aquatic birds. Through three decades of experience, and a bit of trial and error, the success rate for rehabilitating oil-soaked birds has jumped from a mere three percent up to 90 percent, depending on the type of spill. Dawn is proud to support these efforts.

Did you know that Dawn dishwashing liquid has proudly donated thousands of gallons of Dawn to help clean the birds and wildlife affected by oil spills?

Our quest to help wildlife by donating Dawn began with the International Bird Rescue Research Center in 1978, the first group to test Dawn in cleaning oiled wildlife. The group found that we met its criteria: removing most oils at low concentrations, being non-irritating to the feathers, skin, and eyes, rinsing easily and quickly from feathers, and being easily accessible. Since 1979, the International Bird Rescue Research Center has used Dawn on all U.S. oil spills and beyond (where available or when shipped by Dawn to the site).

There's been an enormous reduction in major oil spills such as the Exxon Valdez; now, it is more likely that birds and wildlife will be affected by smaller oil spills. Each day they encounter oil runoff from our lawn mowers and boats, and oil-soaked streets from cars and trucks. Find out more about everyday dangers faced by wildlife and please join our commitment to help wildlife by participating in the Save-A-Duck program.

Dawn to the Rescue
Not only does Dawn help clean oiled wildlife, but on April 30, 1998, it was also used to clean nearly 8,000 gallons of heated animal fat off a roadway in Cincinnati.

After highway crews tried more than a dozen products and solvents to no avail, they called on technical experts from Procter & Gamble to assist in the cleanup. After making an assessment of the site, the remedy was clear—Dawn dishwashing liquid.

At the completion of the cleanup, more than 3.5 tons (1,200 gallons) of Dawn had been donated by Procter & Gamble to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). Dawn penetrated the grease and enabled crews to wash it away using hot water from an area nearly the size of five football fields.

Did you know. . .
Dawn was used to degrease otters caught in the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska. That's when animal rescue organizations began to routinely use Dawn to help clean oil from wildlife. Dawn has also been used to clean and remove oil from birds in spills in Ashland, Pennsylvania, the Gulf War, and the Galapagos Islands.
