Vera Drake
I am two years behind everyone else on this film. It was good, if not a little slow. But wow, the actress who played Vera WAS really good. Totally believable. This movie just reinforces my view on abortion and that no one should be able to tell you what to do with your body. With this country's turning conservative view on abortion, it scares me to think of women resorting to back-alley wire-hanger abortions.
Watching this movie reminded me of how in high school I used to wear a T-shirt that had an image of a wire hanger with the red circle with the line through it. Everyone thought it was a joke a' la 'Mommie Dearest' about no wire hangers. Surprisingly, when I told them what it meant, I didn't get into any arguments [at least that I remember now].
So that's it for my grand-standing on that. The only issue I had with the movie is that there wasn't a prologue. Did she die in prison? Did she get out? I'm not British so I don't know what happened after where the movie ends. All that is on the internets is talk about the movie itself. I will have to research deeper, later.
