Spoilers - 'Xanadu'
Rented this one because I vaguely remember seeing it as a kid. I especially remembered the glowing 'auras' around people. Cheesy, cheesy, cheesy. Everyone was obviously on drugs in the late '70s. Imagine trying to pitch this today?:
'Ok, so we have Zeus send down on of his daughters to play muse to a disenchanted artist who's job it is to paint oversize album covers. The artist runs in to a rich old guy who happened to be inspired by the same muse 40 years ago.
Together the three of them turn a run down auditorium in to a happening roller-disco. We'll have big musical numbers with music from the 40's and the disco of today. Maybe we should get E.L.O. to throw in some songs too since they are big right now. Yah, that's a blockbuster!'
While I love me some bad 70's films, this one just is bad, and not in a good way. The musical numbers are painful. At least in 'The Apple' they thought they were doing Shakespeare and it resulted in a campy fantasy flick. 'Xanadu' manages to somehow fail at that.
I know there are a lot of people who love this movie, and I could see why, but I don't agree. The only thing I really like about the movie is its 'special effects'. So lo-fi and disco-esque, that I think it gives a great asthetic to the movie. If was Madonna, I would have copied that asthetic for her 'Hung Up' video. It woulda been more authentic early 80's disco.
As for the ending, Gene Kelly calls over a waitress who turns out to be Olivia Newton John's character, and her and the artist are shown talking closely at the end.
