Stephen Colbert vs. G W Bush

It was a rough weekend for the president.

At the White House Correspondents Dinner Saturday night in Washington, George and Laura Bush were not smiling when comedian Stephen Colbert finished his one-man "tribute" to the president in front of 2,700 journalists, politicians and celebrities.

Using his Comedy Central conservative talk-show character's personality, which it should be noted supports the president, Colbert dished out the following, according to Editor & Publisher:

--He urged Bush to ignore his low approval ratings, saying they were based on reality, "and reality has a well-known liberal bias."

--He attacked the press who claimed the recent shake-up in White House personnel was just re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. "This administration is soaring, not sinking. If anything, they are re-arranging the deck chairs on the Hindenburg."

--About the war in Iraq, Colbert said, "I believe that the government that governs best is a government that governs least, and by these standards we have set up a fabulous government in Iraq."

--About the decider-in-chief: "When the president decides something on Monday, he still believes it on Wednesday--no matter what happened Tuesday."

When Colbert left the podium, the Bushes nodded to him, but they did not smile. Editor & Publisher reports, "...Bush had quickly turned from an amused guest to an obviously offended target as Colbert's comments brought up his low approval ratings and problems in Iraq.
