IM Fun - Work Naked

IM conversation concerning this article. 'The fire seared his shorts to his backside.':

James says:

Better off naked.

Brando says:

what does wearing nylon have to do with him catching on fire? did he create a static charge?

Brando says:

oh ah - i just saw this":

Brando says:

'The fire seared his shorts to his backside.'

James says:

No, I think the lighter fluid soaked the fabric and burned him.

James says:

Yeah....if I was going to be set on fire, I'd rather it be naked too.

James says:

I'm pretty sure clothing ignites at a much lower temperature than flesh.

Brando says:

actually wool and silk are naturally fire repellant

Brando says:

we did an experiment in my textiles class where we burned fabric to see what happens

Brando says:

wool wouldn't catch fire - it just melted and same with silk

Brando says:

polyester and cotton lit up like an xmas tree

James says:

Hmmmm.....wouldn't that be worse though? To have all this melted silk and wool?

James says:

I was thinking along the lines of Jimi's guitar. He'd set it on fire by soaking it in lighter fluid. But the fluid burned off so quickly that it never damaged the guitar.

Brando says:

if it was wool or silk it would probably burn off quick enough that it wouldn't melt

Brando says:

so when working with flammable materials i guess you should always wear silk
