Today In - 'Mountain Lions'

Residents warned after mountain lion lunges at window

'GOLDEN – The Department of Wildlife is warning residents around Golden to beware of mountain lions in the area after one reportedly lunged at a woman standing in front of a window.

The DOW says it happened at a home in the 300 block of Cliff Lane, near Peery Parkway and Partridge Circle on the western edge of North Table Mountain on August 30.

A woman was standing near the window when she heard a loud bang on the glass behind her. She turned around to see a large mountain lion circle her back patio twice before disappearing into the open space behind the home.

Golden Police say they have had a higher than usual amount of calls related to mountain lions this year, but this is the first report of any aggressive behavior.

Residents are urged to call 911 if they see a mountain lion in the area. They should not go hiking, biking or jogging alone or during dusk and dawn, when mountain lions are most active.

The DOW says you should also not allow children to play outside or walk to and from the bus stop alone; do not leave pets or pet food outside; and do not feed other wildlife because the food can attract the mountain lions.

If you do encounter a mountain lion, the DOW says you should not run and not act scared. Instead, look the lion in the eyes, talk calmly yet firmly, and make yourself look big. Try to give the lion a way out. You may back away slowly if you feel you can retreat. If the lion behaves aggressively, throw stones, branches or whatever you can get your hands on. Without crouching or turning your back, fight back if the lion attacks you.'
