Cow knocks over woman on bike, steps on her legs

'BOULDER (AP) - A woman has escaped serious injury and has refused medical treatment after a cow knocked the woman down and walked on her legs in Boulder.

Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks ranger Pete Taylor says the woman was riding her bicycle along the South Boulder Creek Trail on Monday when she encountered the cow and stopped to let the animal cross.

Instead, the cow knocked the woman over and stepped on her legs.

Taylor says the woman wasn't seriously hurt. Her name was not released.

The cow had left the area by the time rangers arrived, but other people warned fellow bikers and hikers on the trail about the animal.

Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance vice president Jason Vogel called the incident "odd, rare and random."'

Couple charged with child abuse after bringing baby inside bar

'BOULDER – A couple is charged with child abuse after bringing their 5-month-old son inside a bar early Friday morning.

Elizabeth Samoy says she and her husband, Ryan Worley, went out to eat with friends, and then went for drinks at 7 on Pearl, located at 1035 Pearl Street. Samoy says she was outside on the patio, drinking a couple of glasses of wine. Witnesses told Boulder Police both Samoy and Worley were drunk.

"My husband came from the bar at one point with the baby and said that he had been dancing on the floor with the baby and I told him not to bring the baby in there because the DJ had come on and it was very loud," Samoy said. "I was at the table talking with other people at the table about taking a cab home and they had all agreed to pay for it. They were supportive of that. And before I could do anything else, there was a commotion and all these police officers showed up and they took my husband inside and handed me the baby."

Samoy says police took them both in for questioning. Police say Samoy blew a 0.146 on a breathalyzer test. The legal limit in Colorado is 0.08. Police say Worley refused the test and spent the night in jail. The Department of Social Services took the baby into temporary custody for the night.

"It's not something that we come across often, this type of situation," said Boulder Police Department spokesperson Julie Brooks. "I don't even recall the last time we were called to a bar, if you will, to take custody of an infant. It's not something that happens frequently. We hope the family can get the resources they need to make sure the situation does not happen again."

Samoy says her son was returned to her the next day, but says because of a court order, Worley is not allowed back home or to see his son for at least a week.

Social Services is now monitoring the family and Samoy must take breathalyzer tests all week.

"I know my judgment is being called into question now, and that's something I take very seriously," she said. "So I'm going to do whatever I have to do to prove that, to prove myself."'

Man dies during Bolder Boulder

'BOULDER – For the first time in its 29-year history, a person participating in the Bolder Boulder has died.

Race organizers say 65-year-old Ross "Jack" Lowe of Littleton collapsed on Monday at 19th Street and Balsam, halfway through the race just before 9:45 a.m.

Paramedics on bicycles rushed to his aid but he was pronounced dead later after being taken to Boulder Community Hospital.

The paramedics on bicycles were able to treat Lowe in under a minute with a defibrillator and a breathing tube, according to race organizers.

A medical spokesman for the race says Lowe had a scar on his chest that suggests he could have had a previous cardiac surgery.'

Mountain lion killed by wildlife officials

'BOULDER – A mountain lion, which had been deemed a "nuisance cat" by wildlife officials was shot and killed on Thursday.

Division of Wildlife officials say for the past three days, the mountain lion had been reportedly in the Pinebrook Hills subdivision within the city limits.

"We had a problem up there," said Jennifer Churchill, a spokeswoman for the Division of Wildlife.

Churchill says the mountain lion had been aggressively taking pets from people's yards and had clearly become far too comfortable around people.

In one instance, a woman went to let her dog out and realized the lion was not only in her yard, but was at her back porch, according to Churchill. The woman saw the mountain lion and did not let her dog out.

Churchill says the male cat weighed an estimated 100 pounds. His body will be sent to Fort Collins for a necropsy.'

CU testing pay-by-phone parking spots

'BOULDER (AP) - Need to pay for parking? Forty parking spots at the University of Colorado now allow drivers to phone it in.

As part of a 90-day trial through June, coin-operated parking meters at certain spots have been replaced by machines that accept cash and credit cards.

For users who have set up an account through Verrus Mobile Technologies' Web site, payments also can be phoned in and billed to a credit or debit card.

Instead of rushing out to feed an expired meter, a driver can call to add parking time. The driver gets a text message when the meter is about to run out.'
