'Jealous wife' charged after fatal genitals fire

Australian accused of setting husband ablaze after he hugged woman

'ADELAIDE, Australia - An Australian woman accused of setting her husband's genitals on fire because she thought he was having an affair has been charged with murder.

Prosecutors said 44-year-old Rajini Narayan confessed to neighbors that she set her husband on fire on Dec. 8, 2008, after she saw him hug another woman.

She was initially charged with endangering life and arson but the charges were upgraded to murder after her 47-year-old husband, Satish Narayan, died from his injuries last week.

Prosecutor Lucy Boord said Narayan told neighbors she was a "jealous wife" but she hadn't meant to kill him when she doused the sleeping man's genitals with an alcohol-based solvent and then set him on fire.

Boord quoted Narayan allegedly saying: "I just wanted to burn his penis so it belongs to me and no one else. ... I didn't mean this to happen."

The husband jumped out of bed and knocked over the bottle of alcohol, causing the fire to spread and resulting in 1 million Australian dollars ($711,000) of damage to their town house and an adjacent property, the Adelaide Advertiser reported.

Narayan was remanded in custody for psychological assessment and will reappear in court Friday. She has been charged with murder, arson and three counts of endangering life, as the couple's three children were at home during the incident.'

Standoff suspect left notes saying he owed money

'DENVER - The man who took hostages after an extensive crime spree was planning a violent end to his life.

9NEWS sources say 39-year-old Steven Stewart left a will and suicide notes behind detailing that he owed a drug dealer money and would kill that person or himself.

Denver Police say Stewart took his own life at the end of the more than six-hour standoff at the Peachtree Apartments near Kendall Street and Hampden Avenue.

Police say in a 12-hour span on Tuesday, Stewart stole a motorcycle, carjacked three people at gunpoint, kidnapped and released a person and then started the standoff, holding at least one woman hostage.

The standoff began after 6 p.m. and police were able to rescue the hostage just after 10 p.m. Police then threw gas into the apartment and once they went inside they found Stewart dead.

Police released a picture of Stewart from 2001, which could indicate a previous criminal record.

Police are investigating if Stewart was responsible for six burglaries in the Coventry neighborhood in Littleton and Bow Mar on Sunday where he may have also stolen two vehicles.

According to records with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Stewart had 16 aliases and had been arrested more than 25 times since 1986. He faced a number of charges including theft, drug possession and selling, DUI, fraud and vehicle theft.

Shantel Rivas lives in an apartment two floors above the unit where Stewart allegedly held the family hostage. Rivas tried to protect her two children by putting them in what she thought was the safest room in their apartment.

"After they fell asleep, I put them in the bathtub and tried to stay in the bathroom," she said. "Just hearing he had a gun, I was afraid of what might happen."

Rivas and other neighbors say they heard glass breaking periodically during the standoff.

"I heard a lot of glass breaking and a woman screaming," said a neighbor who identified herself as Melinda. "I was so scared for her because she's our neighbor and they have little kids."

Police would not release the names of any of the victims involved. However, family members and apartment managers were seen Wednesday afternoon taking the family away from the apartment complex and to an area hotel. Workers have boarded up the windows of the apartment in which police say Stewart held the family hostage.'

'A British couple whose drunken escapade involving sex on the beach led to tabloid headlines -- and a clash between Western permissiveness and Islamic values -- were sentenced Thursday by a Dubai court to three months in prison.

Vince Acors and Michelle Palmer were each sentenced to the prison term, fined $272 for drinking alcohol and ordered to be deported immediately upon leaving prison.

The pair was found guilty of having unmarried sex after a taxi had picked them up from a champagne brunch at a five-star hotel and drove them to Jumeirah beach in the United Arab Emirates’ most culturally-tolerant emirate of Dubai.

The case, which grew out of a tryst on July 5, quickly became a morality tale set amid globalization and Dubai’s skyline of sharp-angled, glittering high-rises.

The emirate is a financial hub in the Middle East, catering to tourists and multi-billion dollar business deals. It is also an Islamic state straining to balance Western influence and wealth with religious traditions that forbid alcohol, un-married sex and homosexuality.'

Woman in cow suit arrested after urinating on porch

'MIDDLETOWN, Ohio – A woman wearing a cow costume was arrested for disorderly conduct Tuesday.

Major Mark Hoffman, with Middletown, Ohio Police, said Michelle Allen threatened police and urinated on a neighbor’s front porch.

Police say Allen was arrested for causing traffic problems, chasing kids in her neighborhood and not complying with police when they told her to return home. The police report stated officials could smell alcohol on her breath and her words were slurred.

Allen pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and was sentenced to a month in jail.

Hoffman says while Allen was in court, she challenged people to “suck her udders.” No information has been released as to why she was wearing the cow costume.

Allen has been arrested over 50 times on charges ranging from theft to prostitution.'

'VALENTINE, Neb.—Boy, how people here wish their busiest vandal would find another way to make his mark. Beginning more than a year ago, some man has been skipping from one business to another at night, pressing his naked behind—sometimes his groin, sometimes both—on windows. Store owners, church workers and school janitors have had to wash lotion and petroleum jelly off the windows he selects.

"This is the weirdest case I've ever seen," said police Chief Ben McBride.

Some residents of Valentine, a town of about 2,650 people, find some humor in the strange vandalism and have taken to calling the perpetrator the "Butt Bandit." But they also can't help but cringe when finding his marks.

"We were completely grossed out," said Kalli Kieborz, who works in a downtown building. "One day I walked into the office and an employee said, 'Oh, my God, we've been struck!'"

The police chief is far from amused.

"It's not funny," McBride said. "We're worried about the next step."

It started in spring 2007, when the window of a Methodist church was greased with an imprint. McBride figured it was a high school prank. But the church kept getting hit, even after police staked it out.

The bandit struck business after business, window after window last summer.

Then he—and maybe, McBride said, copycat vandals—stopped over the fall and winter.

"People said he was done," McBride said. "Then he started back up this summer."

During one particularly brazen session, virtually all the windows at a local hotel were imprinted.

McBride said no one has reported seeing the vandal in action. The only clue is a blurry picture of him caught by a surveillance camera at the middle school last year.

The man was 6-feet-tall or slightly taller, and slender. He had a dark complexion, and McBride said the man's dark hair was styled in a "1980s, feathered look."

Valentine, in remote north-central Nebraska, promotes itself as "The Heart City." Downtown sidewalks are painted with hearts, and locals encourage people from around the country to send their Valentine's Day cards to the local post office so they can be mailed out with the word "Valentine" stamped on them.

"This is not normal behavior for Valentine," Cherry County Attorney Eric Scott said. "It's not funny or something people want to be exposed to."'

School speaker berates students over 'slutty' pictures

'WINDSOR – A school district is apologizing after a police officer invited to speak at a high school assembly called out students by name, saying their MySpace.com pages were inviting to sexual predators.

Windsor High School Principal Rick Porter has apologized to the parents of two high school girls targeted in the lecture by Cheyenne Police Officer John Gay on Tuesday.

Porter told parents he had heard Gay's Internet safety presentation before, and while he knew the officer would mention local students online postings, Porter told parents he was surprised by the tone and language used.

"He basically just said I was asking to be raped," said Shaylah Nordic, a Windsor sophomore.

A photo from Nordic's MySpace.com page, depicting her in a T-shirt and shorts, bending over and pointing at a new pair of shoes, was displayed on a screen in front of two separate student assemblies.

"He was saying that the posture of her rear end could be appealing to a sexual predator," said Ty Nordic, Shaylah's father.

"He did this in a mocking way," Ty said. "He took a pretty innocent picture and made it look sleazy."

Ty says Gay told the students that older men would be masturbating to her picture.

"She was belittled, embarrassed and humiliated," Ty said.

Ty says he accepts the school's apology but questions why teachers or administrators failed to intervene as Gay mocked his daughter until she ran from the room in tears. Gay then moved on to target photos of other Windsor students.

"I understand the intent of the program," Ty said. "But he went way, way, way too far."

His daughter agrees.

"The whole MySpace awareness thing, I am on-board 100 percent," said Shaylah. "But he could have done it in a different way."

Shaylah says teachers comforted her after she left the assembly but did not step in beforehand, even when other students yelled at Gay to leave her alone.

"My counselor said none of them knew what to do," Shaylah said. "(They didn't feel like) they had the authority to tell him to stop."

She says Gay called her later in the week to apologize.

Gay did not return a call requesting comment.

Porter declined an on-camera interview but agreed to answer questions submitted by e-mail. His response has not been received.'

Greyhound Nixes Ads Touting Peaceful Upside Of Bus Travel After Passenger Was Decapitated

'Greyhound has scrapped an ad campaign that extolled the relaxing upside of bus travel after one of its passengers was accused of beheading and cannibalizing another traveler.

The ad's tag line was "There's a reason you've never heard of 'bus rage."'

Greyhound spokeswoman Abby Wambaugh said Wednesday a billboard and some tunnel posters near a bus terminal in Toronto are still up and would be removed later in the day.

"Greyhound knows how important it is to get these removed and we are doing everything possible," Wambaugh said. "This is something that we immediately asked to be done last week, realizing that these could be offensive."

Vince Weiguang Li, who immigrated to Canada from China in 2004, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 22-year-old carnival worker Tim McLean. He has yet to enter a plea.

Thirty-seven passengers were aboard the Greyhound from Edmonton, Alberta, to Winnipeg, Manitoba, as it traveled at night along a desolate stretch of the TransCanada Highway about 12 miles from Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. Witnesses said Li attacked McLean unprovoked, stabbing him dozens of times.

As horrified passengers fled the bus, Li severed McLean's head, displaying it to some of the passengers outside the bus, witnesses said.

A police officer at the scene reported seeing the attacker hacking off pieces of the victim's body and eating them, according to a police report.

Wambaugh said the ads only appeared in Canada and that some in Ontario and western Canada have already been removed. About 20,000 inserts of the Greyhound ads were scheduled to be put into an Alberta Summer Games handbook but they stopped the presses.'

Suspicious Norwegian officials discover 2.2 pounds of drug under hairpiece

'OSLO, Norway - A British woman's bulging wig did not fool customs agents in Norway who realized she wasn't just having a bad hair day.

The wig was concealing 2.2 pounds of cocaine glued to her head and customs agents detained her on suspicion of cocaine smuggling, authorities said Wednesday.

The 32-year-old suspect, whose name was withheld, arrived late Sunday at Vaernes airport near the city of Trondheim on a flight from Copenhagen, Denmark, the customs service said.

"The agent thought she had a great deal of hair and suspected that she was wearing a wig," the agency said. "The wig was examined and the agents found a bag of cocaine."

Norway's largest newspaper, Verdens Gang, said the cocaine was glued so firmly to the woman's real hair that police brought her to the local hospital to have it removed.

Kjetil Mjoesund, of Trondheim police, confirmed that it was glued to her head, but had no information about how it was removed. He said she was taken for a routine medical check.

A court ordered the women held until July 15, pending a formal indictment and trial.'

Bandits rob gas station disguised in thong underwear

'ARVADA – Police were searching Thursday for two men believed to have robbed a gas station wearing brightly-colored women's thong underwear over their faces.

Arvada Police say the robbery occurred at the Diamond Shamrock at Wadsworth Boulevard and West 68th Avenue on May 16 just before 5 a.m.

The suspects entered the business with the thongs over their faces and demanded cash from the clerk on duty, according to police.

The bandits left with an undisclosed amount of money and cigarettes.

They were not armed during the robbery.

The robbery was caught by a surveillance camera.

Police describe one suspect, wearing the green thong over his face, as a Hispanic man in his early 20s. He's 6 feet tall and weighs between 160 and 180 pounds. He has short black hair and was last seen wearing a dark blue shirt, blue jeans and dark shoes.

Police describe the other suspect, wearing the blue thong over his face, as a Hispanic man in his early to mid 20s. He's between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10 and 180 to 200 pounds. He has short black hair. He has a cross tattoo on his right upper arm and a tribal tattoo on his left upper arm.

Police say a dark-colored vehicle used gas pump #5 at approximately 4:45 a.m. The person may have observed something and is asked to contact Arvada Police.
