This story cracked me up due to what my brain conjured up of playing against a team where they all have ADD.
School apologizes after 100-0 basketball victory

'DALLAS - A Texas school whose girls basketball team beat another team, 100-0, has apologized, calling its win "shameful" and "a victory without honor."

The Covenant School of Dallas also has asked to forfeit the Jan. 13 game against Dallas Academy.

A parent who attended the game praised the Covenant players, but said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points.

"I do think they ran up the score," said Renee Peloza, whose daughter plays for Dallas Academy. "I think the bad judgment was in the full-court press and the 3-point shots."

Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and is winless over the last four seasons. The academy specializes in teaching students struggling with "learning differences" such as short attention spans or dyslexia.

There is no mercy rule in girls' basketball that shortens the game or permits the clock to continue running when scores become lopsided. There is, however, "a golden rule" that should have applied in this contest, said Edd Burleson, the director of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools, which oversees private school athletics in Texas.

In a statement on its Web site, the board chair and head of The Covenant School said it formally apologized to the other school after the story first appeared in the Dallas Morning News on Thursday morning.

"It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened," the statement said. "We humbly apologize."

In asking to forfeit the game, the elite north Dallas Christian school also said, "A victory without honor is a great loss."

Jim Richardson, headmaster at the Dallas Academy, said he accepts the apology and that the two schools remain friends.

At a shoot around Thursday, several Dallas Academy players said they were frustrated during the game but felt it was a learning opportunity.

"We don't play to win, we play to have fun," said Lauren Click, a junior on the team. "I was pretty relieved the game was over."

Team members also said they are excited about some of the attention they are receiving from the loss, including an invitation from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban to see an NBA game from his suite.

"Even if you are losing, you might as well keep playing," said Shelby Hyatt, a freshman on the team. "Keep trying, and it's going to be OK.

Staff Finds White House in the Technological Dark Ages

'Two years after launching the most technologically savvy presidential campaign in history, Obama officials ran smack into the constraints of the federal bureaucracy yesterday, encountering a jumble of disconnected phone lines, old computer software, and security regulations forbidding outside e-mail accounts.

What does that mean in 21st-century terms? No Facebook to communicate with supporters. No outside e-mail log-ins. No instant messaging. Hard adjustments for a staff that helped sweep Obama to power through, among other things, relentless online social networking.

"It is kind of like going from an Xbox to an Atari," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said of his new digs.

In many ways, the move into the White House resembled a first day at school: Advisers wandered the halls, looking for their offices. Aides spent hours in orientation, learning such things as government ethics rules as well as how their paychecks will be delivered. And everyone filled out a seemingly endless pile of paperwork.

There were plenty of first-day glitches, too, as calls to many lines in the West Wing were met with a busy signal all morning and those to the main White House switchboard were greeted by a recording, redirecting callers to the presidential Web site. A number of reporters were also shut out of the White House because of lost security clearance lists.

By late evening, the vaunted new White House Web site did not offer any updated posts about President Obama's busy first day on the job, which included an inaugural prayer service, an open house with the public, and meetings with his economic and national security teams.

Nor did the site reflect the transparency Obama promised to deliver. "The President has not yet issued any executive orders," it stated hours after Obama issued executive orders to tighten ethics rules, enhance Freedom of Information Act rules and freeze the salaries of White House officials who earn more than $100,000.

The site was updated for the first time last night, when information on the executive orders was added. But there were still no pool reports or blog entries.

No one could quite explain the problem -- but they swore it would be fixed.

One member of the White House new-media team came to work on Tuesday, right after the swearing-in ceremony, only to discover that it was impossible to know which programs could be updated, or even which computers could be used for which purposes. The team members, accustomed to working on Macintoshes, found computers outfitted with six-year-old versions of Microsoft software. Laptops were scarce, assigned to only a few people in the West Wing. The team was left struggling to put closed captions on online videos.'

Cow knocks over woman on bike, steps on her legs

'BOULDER (AP) - A woman has escaped serious injury and has refused medical treatment after a cow knocked the woman down and walked on her legs in Boulder.

Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks ranger Pete Taylor says the woman was riding her bicycle along the South Boulder Creek Trail on Monday when she encountered the cow and stopped to let the animal cross.

Instead, the cow knocked the woman over and stepped on her legs.

Taylor says the woman wasn't seriously hurt. Her name was not released.

The cow had left the area by the time rangers arrived, but other people warned fellow bikers and hikers on the trail about the animal.

Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance vice president Jason Vogel called the incident "odd, rare and random."'

Tea’s Wonderful History

'Tea is among the world’s oldest and most revered beverages.

It is today’s most popular beverage in the world, next to water.

According to Chinese legend, tea was invented accidentally by the Chinese Emperor Shen Nong in 2737 B.C. Emperor Shen Nong was a scholar and herbalist, as well as a creative scientist and patron of the arts.

Among other things, the emperor believed that drinking boiled water contributed to good health.

By his decree, his subjects and servants had to boil their water before drinking it as a hygiene precaution.

On one summer day while he was visiting a distant region, he and his entourage stopped to rest.

The servants began to boil water for the skilled ruler and his subjects to drink.

Dried leaves from a nearby camellia bush fell into the boiling water.

The emperor was interested in the new liquid because it had a pleasing aroma in this new brew interested the emperor, so he drank the infusion and discovered that it was very refreshing and had a delightful flavor.

He declared that tea gives vigor to the body, thus.

That was when tea was invented, but it was considered as a medicinal beverage.

It was around 300 A.D. when, tea became a daily drink.

It was not until the Tang and Song Dynasties when tea showed some significance in Chinese tradition.

During the mid-Tang Dynasty (780 A.D.), a scholar named Lu Yu published the first definitive book, Cha Ching or The Tea Classic, on tea after he spent over twenty years studying the subject.

This documentation included his knowledge of planting, processing, tasting, and brewing tea. His research helped to elevate tea drinking to a high status throughout China.

This was when the art of tea drinking was born.

Later, a Song Dynasty emperor helped the spread of tea consumption further by indulging in this wonderful custom.

He enjoyed tea drinking so much, that he bestowed tea as gifts only to those who were worthy.

During this e same time, tea was the inspirationinspired many of books, poems, songs, and paintings.

This not only popularized tea, it also elevated tea’s value which drew tea-growers to the capital.

Between the Yuan and Qing Dynasties, the technology of tea production continuously advanced to become more simplified and to improve the methods of enhancing tea flavor.

During this period, tea houses and other tea-drinking establishments were opening up all over China.

By 900 A.D., tea drinking spread from China to Japan where the Japanese Tea Ceremony or Chanoyu, was created.

In Japan, tea was elevated to an art form which requires years of dedicated studying. Unlike the Japanese people, the Chinese people tend to view tea drinking as a form of enjoyment: to have after a meal or to serve when guests visit.

Tea was introduced to Europe in the 1600s; it was introduced to England in 1669.

At that time, the drink was enjoyed only by the aristocracy because a pound of tea cost an average British laborer the equivalent of nine months in wages.

The British began to import tea in larger qualities to satisfy the rapidly expanding market.

Tea became Britain’s most important item of trade from China.

All classes were able to drink tea as the tea trade increased and became less of a luxury.

The word “tea” was derived from ancient Chinese dialects.

Such words as “Tchai,” “"Cha,” and “Tay” were used to describe the tea leaf as well as the beverage.

The tea plant’s scientific name is Camellia sinensis (which is from the The aceae family of the Theales order), and it is indigenous to China and parts of India.

The tea plant is an evergreen shrub that develops fragrant white, five-petaled flowers, and; it is related to the magnolia.

Tea is made from young leaves and leaf buds from the tea tree.

Two main varieties are cultivated: C. sinensis sinensis, a Chinese plant with small leaves, and C. sinensis assamica, an Indian plant with large leaves. Hybrids of these two varieties are also cultivated.

What we call “herbal tea” is technically not tea because it does not come from the tea plant but consists a mixture of flowers, fruit, herbs or spices from other plants.'

'Jealous wife' charged after fatal genitals fire

Australian accused of setting husband ablaze after he hugged woman

'ADELAIDE, Australia - An Australian woman accused of setting her husband's genitals on fire because she thought he was having an affair has been charged with murder.

Prosecutors said 44-year-old Rajini Narayan confessed to neighbors that she set her husband on fire on Dec. 8, 2008, after she saw him hug another woman.

She was initially charged with endangering life and arson but the charges were upgraded to murder after her 47-year-old husband, Satish Narayan, died from his injuries last week.

Prosecutor Lucy Boord said Narayan told neighbors she was a "jealous wife" but she hadn't meant to kill him when she doused the sleeping man's genitals with an alcohol-based solvent and then set him on fire.

Boord quoted Narayan allegedly saying: "I just wanted to burn his penis so it belongs to me and no one else. ... I didn't mean this to happen."

The husband jumped out of bed and knocked over the bottle of alcohol, causing the fire to spread and resulting in 1 million Australian dollars ($711,000) of damage to their town house and an adjacent property, the Adelaide Advertiser reported.

Narayan was remanded in custody for psychological assessment and will reappear in court Friday. She has been charged with murder, arson and three counts of endangering life, as the couple's three children were at home during the incident.'

Awk-WARD!

The other week at work, I was in the restroom washing my hands when something awkward happened.

I had finished washing my hands and drying them when I heard water running.

Now, our ghetto toilets and urinals are those ones with the pull bar, and sometimes they get stuck after you flush, sending gallon upon gallon down the drain.

[You have to push in the bar in a special way to get it to stop.]

Well, being as earth-conscious as ever, I looked around the wall separating the basins and the urinal area, to be surprised by the sight of one of our [cute-ish] managers taking a whizz.

Now normally it would be no big whoop, but his head was turned around to look behind him just as I peered over.

Needless to say, it looked like I was being all perv on him and trying to scope him out at the loo.

That wasn't the case.

While it didn't sound like the mad rush of water that happens when the bar gets stuck, it didn't sound like a normal wee either.

Maybe he's taking Urigro:

So, yah it felt awkward, and now every time I pass him in the halls I picture him thinking I'm some kind of lascivious lavatory lurker.

Although, the other day he began making small talk in the break room, so maybe it's just all in my head.
